Popular western sports widely played in Japan include association football and basketball. In fact, association football is one of the most popular sports in the country. The organization organizes futsal, men's and women's national football teams. The sport was introduced back in the Meiji period and has become an amazingly popular. When it comes to the basketball, the sport was imported from the Western countries. The major professional basketball league in Japan is organized by the Japanese Basketball Association. The sport mainly emerged since two players including Takuya Kawamura and Yuta Tabuse started their careers. Ever since the sport has been widely played in Japan even becoming of the most popular sports in Japan. It should be noted that Japan national basketball team won the major FIBA Asia Championship even on two occasions while at the same time qualifying for the event more than twenty times. The country also hosted the 2006 FIBA World Championship that was played in cities Hiroshima, Sendai, Hamamatsu, Saitama, and Sapporo.
